Last time, I explained up to the point where I missed my return flight.

I'll continue from the moment I was left in shock.

Forcing my exhausted legs to move, I explained my situation to the airport staff.

Then, I was led down an unfamiliar path, where I had to show my passport and explain my situation again.

Even without speaking English, I managed to communicate through single words and a sorrowful expression...

Most of the staff understood my situation, and I was shuffled from place to place while completing various procedures.

I was made to stand in a long line, which turned out to be for people who had also missed their flights.

I thought I was the only one who had missed my flight, but seeing so many others in the same situation made me feel oddly relieved.

While waiting in the long line, I realized I needed to contact someone back home.

My parents were supposed to pick me up in Fukuoka, so if I couldn’t return on that flight, they would be worried.

I tried every possible way to contact someone, and surprisingly, Discord worked.

Discord is usually used for gaming communication, but I used it to reach out to people living in Japan.

Someone in the community I asked for help told me that if I switched to a Japanese SIM card, I could use SMS in China.

It turned out that I couldn’t use SMS because I was using an international SIM.

To swap the SIM, I needed a tiny pin, but I didn’t have one...

Just as I was struggling, I noticed that the people standing behind me in line were Japanese.

Normally, I can't bring myself to talk to strangers (I even get flustered when spoken to), but I gathered the courage to ask for help with the SIM pin.

One of them happened to have a thin pin from their piercing, and they let me borrow it, allowing me to open the SIM slot successfully.

While talking about my situation, they were called away by the airport staff because they still had an available flight.

Thank you. the sense of relief when speaking with fellow Japanese people abroad is indescribable...

I explained that I had missed my connecting flight and requested to book a new one.

The next available flight was the following day, meaning I had to stay overnight in Shanghai.

I resigned myself to the extra expense, but to my surprise, the airline covered all the costs.

As expected of a great nation—very generous (though they didn’t let me on the plane in the first place).

We were taken to a designated area where all the stranded passengers were gathered.

After collecting our luggage, we boarded a highway bus to the hotel.

There were too many passengers, and not enough buses to accommodate everyone.

Perhaps fearing there wouldn’t be another bus, everyone desperately tried to board.

Everyone was exhausted and just wanted to rest at the hotel.

I somehow managed to get on a bus and arrived at the hotel safely.

The hotel was in a place that was either deserted or still under development.

It reminded me of the Dolphin Hotel from Haruki Murakami’s A Wild Sheep Chase.

It was so luxurious and beautiful that it might have been the fanciest hotel I had ever stayed in.

As soon as I lay on the soft bed, a week’s worth of exhaustion washed over me, and I fell into a deep sleep.

When I woke up in the morning, I checked out at the designated time as instructed.

I was told I needed to take the same highway bus back to the airport, so I followed the given bus number and tried to board.

However, there were two identical buses, and I couldn't figure out where the bus number was displayed.

A security guard was standing nearby, so

I asked, "Does this bus go to Pudong Airport?"

When I asked,

NO
He replied, "NO."

That’s what he said.

NO??
No?? What do you mean?? He just flat-out refused to talk to me.

It was just like what happened at the airport...

Maybe he was just in a bad mood.

As I was left speechless, someone spoke to me from behind in Japanese.

"Where are you trying to go?"

"I want to get to Pudong Airport."

"Wait a moment."

The man spoke fluent Chinese with the security guard.

"You should take this bus."

Come on, security guard.

Well, maybe my English was just too bad for him to understand.

That kind old man told me he currently lives in Tokyo but had come back to Shanghai.

Seeing someone skillfully using a foreign language and helping a struggling foreigner in a foreign land—I really admire that.

They were kind enough to let me take photos.

After all that, I finally made it to the airport and was able to board my flight to Japan safely.

After arriving back, I ate a Chicken Nanban bento at a convenience store in Fukuoka Airport. It was so good...

The relief of being back home and the deliciousness of Japanese food hit me all at once—I was deeply moved.

As I write this travel journal, I am once again reminded that this trip was only possible thanks to the kindness of so many people.

The world is truly full of kindness.

みんなありがと;;
Thank you, everyone ;;
